Sam is a 5 year old, 15.2 hand Percheron/QH cross gelding. When I say there aren’t enough good things to say about Sam, I truly mean it. He is a gem of an all around gelding. Undersaddle, Sam has smooth and comfortable gaits. He has a comfortable walk, jog, and lope. He rides softly in the bridle, and it overall light and responsive off your aids. When you put him into a gait, he stays there nicely and you don’t have to keep pushing him to stay there. He picks up both leads well and works off the seat and legs. I have had many different levels of riders on Sam and he is forgiving of mistakes and adapts to the level of rider on his back. He is excellent and trustworthy on the trails. He crosses obstacles with ease. Whether you’re riding in the woods or along the busy streets, Sam keeps his cool and his mind on business. If you don’t feel like saddling up, Sam is happy to go out for a bareback ride as well.
Aside from the enjoyable and relaxing riding, we have used Sam for various jobs as well. We check cows and calves on him regularly. We have also moved them from pasture to pasture and up to the sorting pens. He is also helpful in starting colts. We have ponied colts off of him and used him start colts in the roundpen.
In addition to riding, Sam is a superb driving horse. He drives single and double and has a lot of experience in the harness. We have only hooked him single ourselves, but he is traffic safe and is comfortable driving around the farm or in the streets. He stands well to harness and hook, one person can safely hook and unhook him.
Sam has excellent ground manners and enjoys being around people. He stands to groom and saddle, ties quietly, loads well, and handles his feet nicely. If you’re looking for a safe and reliable horse to add to your family, Sam definitely fits that bill. He has passed every test we have done with him with flying colors.
