Meet Timber, a 9-year-old buckskin gelding standing a solid 15.3 hands tall with the kind of old foundation build that’s getting harder and harder to find. He’s stout enough to carry just about anyone, yet gentle enough that you’ll forget you’re sitting on such a big horse. With his kind eye, puppy-dog personality, and calm nature, Timber has a way of making everyone feel comfortable the moment they meet him.
Around our place, Timber is the horse everyone asks for. He’s our go-to for first-time riders, the horse we hand to friends and family when they come to visit, and the one we trust with nervous kids because we know he’ll take care of them. Whether someone has never swung a leg over a horse or has ridden for years, Timber meets them exactly where they are.
He has spent his life doing a little bit of everything. He’s carried kids through riding lessons, packed guests safely down the trail at the dude ranch, competed in fun play days, worked cattle, pushed cows, been roped off of, tackled cowboy obstacle courses, and put in honest days on the ranch. Through it all, he’s remained exactly the same dependable, kind-hearted gelding.
If trails are your happy place, Timber may just be your perfect match. He doesn’t care if he’s leading the group, bringing up the rear, or riding somewhere in the middle. Large groups, small groups, or heading out by himself—it’s all just another day to Timber. He’s the kind of horse that quietly gives you confidence with every mile.
Timber rides just as nicely as he looks. He has a smooth jog, an easy lope, and a soft one-hand neck rein that makes every ride enjoyable. He’s more “whoa” than “go,” but he’ll gladly do whatever you ask without complaint. If there were a college degree for horses, Timber would already have a PhD in “been there, done that.”
His gentle personality doesn’t stop when the saddle comes off. He’s the first one waiting to greet you in the pasture, enjoys attention, gets along well with other horses, and is simply a pleasure to have around. He stands quietly for the veterinarian, farrier, bathing, loading, and hauling. There are no tricks, no drama, and no bad habits—just a good, honest horse that’s easy to enjoy.
One of our favorite things about Timber is watching kids climb on him. From nervous first-time riders gripping the saddle horn to confident young riders ready for their next adventure, he takes care of each one with the same quiet patience. Horses like him are the reason people fall in love with riding.
